How to Play Memory Match

The board deals 16 face-down cards — 8 pairs of matching pictures hidden somewhere in the grid. Flip any two cards per turn. If they match, they stay face up and you’ve banked a pair. If they don’t, take a good look before they flip back over, because remembering what you just saw is the entire game.

Your score is your move count, and lower is better. Any two cards you flip counts as one move, so a perfect game — never flipping a card you didn’t need — finishes in exactly 8 moves. Realistically, a good run lands somewhere between 12 and 16. Your best score is saved, so there’s always a number to chase.

Tips to Finish in Fewer Moves

  • Open corners and edges first. Sweeping the border in your first few turns reveals a lot of the board in positions that are easy to remember later.
  • Say the position out loud (in your head). “Pizza, top right corner” sticks far better than a vague sense of “it was somewhere over there.” Naming locations is the oldest memory trick in the book, and it works.
  • Never flip two unknowns late in the game. Once half the board is revealed, almost every turn should start with a card you already know about. Random flipping late is how good runs die.
  • Slow down after a miss. The pair you just failed to match is now the pair you know the most about. Take a beat and lock in where both cards are before moving on.
