How to Play 2048
Every swipe slides all tiles on the 4×4 board in one direction. When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into a single tile worth their sum: two 2s become a 4, two 4s become an 8, and so on. After every move, a new tile (a 2 or occasionally a 4) appears in a random empty cell. Your goal is to keep merging until you build the famous 2048 tile — and the game ends when the board fills up with no legal merges left.
It sounds simple, and your first few games will probably end around 256. That is normal. 2048 is a game about discipline: the players who reach 2048 (and beyond — the board technically goes much higher) all use some version of the same strategy.
The Corner Strategy
- Pick one corner and commit to it. Your biggest tile should live in a corner — bottom-right is the classic choice — and it should never leave.
- Only use three directions. If your corner is bottom-right, swipe down, right, and left. Never swipe up unless you are completely stuck, because one careless up-swipe can pull your big tile out of its corner.
- Build a “staircase”. Keep your bottom row ordered from big to small (for example 512 · 128 · 32 · 8). Merges then flow naturally toward the corner like water downhill.
- Don’t chase every merge. A tempting small merge that breaks your row order usually costs more than it earns. Keep the structure, and the points come by themselves.
